Registers and databases

The registers and databases of the CCM ABCD systematically collect extensive patient data on cardiovascular diseases and form an essential basis for scientific studies and research projects. They enable detailed analyses of disease causes, risk factors and treatment outcomes, which contribute both to the development of new therapeutic approaches and to the optimization of prevention strategies. The extensive data thus promotes understanding of the determinants of cardiovascular diseases and improves clinical decision-making.

By using modern technologies such as machine learning, large amounts of data can be analyzed efficiently and hidden patterns can be uncovered. This enables more precise predictions of disease progression, the development of personalized treatment plans and support for clinical decisions. The registries and databases of the CCM ABCD thus contribute significantly to the improvement of patient care and the further development of cardiovascular medicine. The combination of traditional research with modern technologies such as artificial intelligence opens up new potential for the medicine of the future.

Clinical Aortic Valve Research Consortium

The Clinical Aortic Valve Research Consortium of the CCM ABCD serves as the central, cross-site registry for all transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures performed at the four participating centers. In this joint clinical registry, all TAVI procedures are systematically recorded, standardized, and tracked longitudinally. With more than 20,000 TAVI patients treated to date, the network represents one of the largest university-based TAVI databases in Europe.

The goal of the research network is the comprehensive analysis of patient characteristics, procedural strategies, and clinical outcomes following TAVI. The focus is on identifying risk factors, characterizing specific high-risk groups, and continuously optimizing the procedure itself as well as peri- and post-interventional care.

Close cross-site collaboration creates a unique database with high clinical depth and validity, enabling the direct application of scientific findings to daily patient care. The research network thus forms a central foundation for the further development of interventional aortic valve therapy at CCM-ABCD.

IMPPACT TAVI Registry

The IMPPACT-TAVI Registry (Impact of Measured or Predicted Prosthesis-Patient Mismatch after TAVI, DRKS00035691) is an international, multicenter TAVI registry initiated and coordinated by researchers at the CCM ABCD. The registry now includes data from approximately 69,000 patients from 34 centers in Europe and Israel, making it one of the largest scientific TAVI registries worldwide.

IMPPACT-TAVI is designed to investigate clinically relevant questions related to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The focus is on the analysis of valve hemodynamics, prosthesis function, patient selection, risk stratification, and short- and long-term clinical outcomes. Thanks to its large international cohort, the registry enables robust analyses and provides important insights for optimizing the interventional treatment of patients with aortic valve stenosis. The registry’s findings have already been published in several high-impact international journals and form the basis for numerous other scientific projects.

REPAIR Register

The REPAIR Registry (REgistry of PAscal for mitral regurgitation, DRKS00033959) is a multicenter registry initiated and coordinated by researchers at the CCM ABCD to study interventional mitral valve repair using the PASCAL system. The registry currently includes more than 2,600 patients from 14 specialized centers and is the world’s largest industry-independent registry on the use of the PASCAL system.

REPAIR investigates patient selection, procedural strategies, valve function, and short- and long-term clinical outcomes following transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER). In addition, the registry serves to evaluate new generations of devices and to identify patient and procedural characteristics that influence treatment success. The registry’s findings have been published to date in more than ten scientific articles in high-impact international journals and make an important contribution to the further development of interventional mitral valve therapy.

MITRAGEN5 Register

The MITRAGEN5 registry (NCT07543874) is an international, multicenter registry designed to study interventional mitral valve repair using the MitraClip® 5th as part of transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER). The registry includes approximately 30 centers in Europe and the United States, thereby reflecting a broad, real-world clinical landscape for this new generation of devices.

The goal of MITRAGEN5 is the systematic documentation of patient selection, procedural characteristics, and short- and long-term clinical outcomes under real-world clinical conditions. In addition, the study aims to investigate differences between the 5th generation and earlier MitraClip generations in terms of implantation technique, efficiency of valve reconstruction, and clinical outcomes. The registry thus provides important evidence for the further development of catheter-based mitral valve therapy.

Infectious Endocarditis – ABCD Registry and Biobank

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious bacterial infection of the inner lining of the heart and the heart valves. It is rare, has a complex clinical course, and continues to be associated with high mortality. Reliable findings therefore require large, well-characterized patient cohorts, which individual centers cannot provide on their own.

For this reason, the Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, and Düsseldorf sites are pooling their clinical expertise within the CCM ABCD in a joint endocarditis registry with an affiliated biobank. Clinical courses, imaging, microbiological findings, and biological samples are recorded across all sites according to uniform criteria.

Particular emphasis is placed on predisposing factors and high-risk groups with an unfavorable prognosis. Patients with renal insufficiency have a significantly increased risk of endocarditis and are recorded as a separate cohort

The registry and biobank form the foundation of translational endocarditis research at the CCM ABCD and provide the data basis for the clinical and experimental projects built upon them.

CCM AV Valve Registry

Heart failure and functional disorders of the mitral and tricuspid valves are closely intertwined. Thus, the CCM AV Valve Registry was developed based on the Rhineland Heart Failure Network, which was established in Bonn, Cologne, and Düsseldorf at the end of the last decade. With four strong university partners (Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, and Düsseldorf), all mitral and tricuspid valve procedures are now entered into a shared REDCap database.

The primary goals of these joint research projects are to identify patient-specific risk factors and imaging-based predictors, to characterize specific risk groups, and to optimize and further develop heart valve procedures and their follow-up care. Several publications have already emerged from this field of research.
